Dangerous Drugs - Lymerix
Lymerix was used from 1998 to 2002 as a vaccination against a North American strain of Lyme disease. It was produced by GlaxoSmithKline, who cited poor sales, need for frequent boosters, the high price of the vaccine, and exclusion of children when taking the drug off the market. However, health authorities are investigating whether some who receive the vaccine form of Lymerix developed severe cases of arthritis, muscle pain and even Lyme disease itself as a result of using the drug.
Researchers and doctors in the Northeastern United States were the first to report these problems to the FDA. The vaccine was approved by the administration in 1998 and hundreds of thousands of patients have used the drug since its introduction. Numerous lawsuits have been brought against GlaxoSmithKline for Lymerix, and the company settled a large class action suit in 1999.
