Dangerous Drugs - Darvocet
The Public Citizen's Health Research Group recently lobbied the FDA for Darvon and Darvocet, two popular painkillers, to be removed from the consumer market. According to the group, the painkillers have been responsible for more than 2,000 deaths over the last 25 years. High levels of toxicity present in propoxyphene, the main ingredient of the drug, are the proposed reason for the high number of deaths. Since both drugs are relatively weak painkillers with suitable alternatives, the use of the drugs presents an unnecessary risk to consumers.
In fact, acetaminophen, a common over-the-counter painkiller found in such brand name relievers as Tylenol, was found to be equally or more effective than Darvon or Darvocet in the conclusion of 26 medical studies. The same medical studies also recommended Darvon and Darvocet no longer be used as routine painkillers.
